Vintage Mary E California Studio Art Pottery Sculpture Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, vintage Mary Erckenbrack California studio pottery sculpture or figurine. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This piece depicts what appears to be a Polynesian woman. This large piece is approximately 12 7/8 inches tall, 9 1/4 inches long, and 6 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs 4 pounds 1.5 ounces.

This piece is rusty red terracotta, with areas of white and black glazes. It is figural, but there is a hole and cavity area which the former owner used as a vase for dried flowers (I do not know if this holds water or not). This would be a wonderful addition to a studio ceramics collection. Identification The base is marked, Mary E.

Per the Vasefinder Online Museum, Erckenbrack was Seattle-born, but grew up in Rio De Janeiro, London, and Paris. She studied at the University of Washington, and in Le Havre, France.

Erckenbrack was a student of Alexander Archipenko. She was a painter and a printmaker, in addition to being a potter. She set up her studio, Mary E's Mudshop, in San Francisco during the 1930s. Erckenbrack exhibited at the National in 1947 and 1949.

Condition This piece looks very good overall, with no chips. It has light wear and fine, slightly darkened crazing. To the back side, there is a tight and fine hairline crack which begins in the glazed area, where it looks like a craze line; it extends about 1 3/8 inches into the unglazed terracotta.

This does not detract overall (see Photo 4). There is minor residue inside from the previous owner's dried flower arrangement.

Stilt marks beneath are as made. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made.
