Vintage Bennett Welsh Signed Studio Art Pottery Canister Set

VINTAGE BENNETT WELSH SIGNED STUDIO ART POTTERY CANISTER SET. The Rebirth of Pacific Stoneware. In 1960, a Tektronix "Ceramics Chief" named Bennet Welsh revived Pacific Stoneware as a commercial studio pottery, producing artistic ceramics on a commercial scale in that neo-folksy 1960's and 70's tradition. Throwing Oregon clay at the same address on Peninsular in 1970, Welsh was as savvy a businessman as he was a working production potter. He's also exhibiting in galleries, making custom lines for restaurants and hotels, and getting his pottery into Neiman Marcus and Fred Meyer. According to several, unreliable, online sources Welsh also developed the ceramics program at the Portland Art Museum School, now the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and even built the equipment himself. I cannot find a good source for this information, so I called PNCA and they are looking into it.

Also alleged is that Welsh retired in 1985, but continued to make sculptural pottery at his Gresham studio until his death in 1998. Rhis spectacular set has cork lids with a tree image on the front of the jointed canisters. Measurements are 5 1/2 square. The differnet heights are 10 1/2 9 1/2 8 and 7 inches.

The color of the pottery is Serenity green and browns. Darker brown creating the tree design.
