Studio Pottery Ashtray by Robert Maxwell. A small stoneware ashtray by renowned California art ceramicist Robert Maxwell with an irregular, crenellated edge and distinctive glaze work. The body of the piece is unfinished stoneware, with layered glaze around the interior. The bottom of the heavy piece is finished with a glassy glaze that has fractured. This process, known as crazing, is technically a glaze flaw that has been used stylistically throughout the history of art ceramics for its compelling web of fine lines.
