VERY RARE VINTAGE 1940s CERAMIC ARTS STUDIO HAMLET & OPHELIA COMEDY & TRAGEDY MASKS. Pieces were distributed nationally to stores such as Marshall Fields and Gumps. Founded by Lawrence Rabbitt and Reuben Sand, artist Betty Harrington designed more than 800 figurines for the company - her pieces are highly collectible and command big prices. Designed by Betty Harrington in the late 1940's, these Art Deco inspired masks feature Shakespearean figures of Hamlet with his arm around the tragedy mask and Ophelia with her arm around the comedy mask.
Both figures have blond hair with red lips and rosy cheeks. The masks and the outfits of the characters are shades of green. Features and details: Marked on the back CERAMIC ARTS STUDIO, MADISON WIS with a C in a circle The Hamlet wall hanging is also marked HAMLET and Ophelia is marked OPHELIA Material: High gloss glazed ceramic The back part with the marks is unglazed matte bisque, and as such, there is a little dirt and the mark on Hamlet is a little smudged Era: 1940s Measurements: About 8 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide at the widest point Condition: Both pieces are in beautiful shape with no chips, cracks or crazing. Colors are clear and bright and glaze is super glossy and unstained.
All the white spots in the photos are reflections from lighting due to the high gloss glaze.
