Vintage Jacomena Maybeck Studio Pottery Vessel Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage studio art pottery vase by the listed California artist, Jacomena Maybeck. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This hand thrown pot has a broad opening, with a narrow foot. It has gloss and semi-matte brown glazes, with thick drips to the lower exterior.

This item stands approximately 8 1/16 inches tall; it has a maximum width of about 6 7/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 4 pounds 5.6 ounces.

I've owned several pieces by this artist, and this is the largest and most impressive that I've had. This would be a fine addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Maybeck is listed in the Vasefinder online museum. Per Vasefinder, Jacomena Maybeck was born in Java to Dutch parents.

Her family moved to Crockett, California in 1908. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1927, and married Wallen Maybeck (son of architect Bernard Maybeck) that year. After World War II, Maybeck was in Germany, where she started working with clay. Upon returning to the U. She took a class with Edith Heath. Subsequently, she enrolled at the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), where studied under Tony Prieto; she graduated with her M. Maybeck was an assistant and then a teacher at the CCAC from 1946 to 1978. She exhibited at the Pacific Coast Ceramic Exhibitions during the 1950s. She also exhibited at the Association of San Francisco Potters, the California State Fair, and at the 1959 California College of Arts and Crafts 30 Distinguished Alumni exhibit.
