Please excuse the glare in the photos. This pot is approximately 7 3/16 inches tall, with a maximum width of about 6 1/4 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 3 pounds 13.0 ounces.
This pot has a dark greenish-brownish glaze. It would be a super addition to an American studio ceramics collection. Identification This piece is marked beneath, Volckening. This piece is by Paul Volckening; he is a well-known potter, with a listing in the Vasefinder online museum.
Per Vasefinder, Volckening was born in Minneola, New York. His education was at the California College of Arts and Crafts and Mills College. He studied under Tony Prieto. During the early 1950s, Volckening was a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation. He exhibited at the Association of San Francisco Potters during the 1950s, and at the Nationals in 1954 and 1956.Volckening taught at New Mexico Highlands University for many years. Condition The vase looks very good overall, with no cracks. To the interior rim, there is a tiny 1/16 inch flake (shown in the fourth photo). A dark smudge beneath is as found.
