Stoneware with a Cobalt Blue outer glaze. The outer glaze also has a greenish tinge to mid section. Glazed Blue on the inner and base. This vase is one of Frances work in the Sung revival tradition of the period where she based the form, glaze, decoration, firing process and aesthetic theories of Chinese Sung dynasty ceramics.

Her mark, FR in a square monogram surrounded by'1 9 2 VI' is incised on the base. One of the pioneer women studio potters of the early 20th century. She studied pottery under Richard Lunn at the Royal College of Art. Frances Richards worked from her home at 178 Archway Road, London where she had a kiln in the garden.

Her work was illustrated in The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art, 1917, 1927,1928. For most of 20th century Britain was the world leader in studio ceramics, which could be loosely defined as an activity where all stages of manufacture are carried out by a single artist.

Much has been written about these three men, but arguably the first true studio potter was Frances Emma Richards. The Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, Oxford.
