Norstad continued producing pottery as a side venture. He was commissioned by his architectural firm and others to produce large scale pieces, including planters, fireplace fronts, and murals. In 1962, he left the firm to open his own pottery studio. In 1975, production moved to a large studio in Sausalito. Norstad stated his influences to be Peter Voulkos, Bernard Leach, his artist parents, and 1930s through 1950s Scandinavian design.
