Edwin & Mary Scheier Studio Art Pottery Bowl Vase Incised Lines Vintage Listed Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Scheier pottery bowl or vase. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This hand thrown, footed piece has a pale glaze with a contrasting rim. It is decorated with incised lines which make up a zig-zag pattern on the exterior.
This pot is approximately 4 3/16 inches tall, with a rim diameter of about 5 9/16 inches. Unpacked, this finely thrown piece weighs 13.9 ounces.
This would be a great addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. The exact age of this vintage piece is not known. The Scheiers are listed artists in the Vasefinder online museum and on askART. Per Vasefinder, Edwin Scheier studied art in New York, and he was a WPA era supervisor for the Southern States Federal Arts Project.Mary Goldsmith studied in New York and Paris; in Virginia, she was director at the Big Stone Gap Art Center and the Abingdon Art Center. The couple met and married in 1935. The Scheiers set up a studio in Glade Spring, Virginia. They moved to New Hampshire in 1938 after being invited by the League of Arts and Crafts, and they taught at the University of New Hampshire.
Prior to 1968, Mary threw the pottery and Edwin decorated them. The Scheiers exhibited at the Nationals from 1940 to 1960, and during 1964 and 1966.Condition This piece looks great overall, with no chips or cracks. There are light wear marks to the unglazed foot.
There is some fine, faint crazing; on the interior, the crazing has subtle darkening. As made, there are a few tiny, scattered, pinprick glaze indents. Variations in glazing are also as made.
