This piece was wheel-thrown, and then carved with a variety of expressive diagonal scars. Glazed in oxblood red and a grayish white.
Marked with the CL monogram. Fascinating sculptural and functional work.
This was something I created in collaboration with the three venues that showed this exhibition: Zanesville Museum of Art, the Cleveland Artists Foundation (today called ArtNEO), and Bowling Green State University's Art Gallery. For decades, starting about 1949, he taught art and frequently chaired the department at BGSU. The "Charlie pots" as his colleagues and admirers affectionately knew them demonstrate his finesse as a "functional potter, " while often also embodying technical challenges overcome or sculptural elements that enlarge their appeal and success. Lakofsky won awards throughout his career, and his ceramics are found in numerous public and private collections. I'm Mark Bassett, author and collector.
I frequently recommend the group Pottery Collector on Facebook. Great place for beginners and advanced collectors to mingle and learn more about art pottery and studio pottery of all sorts. As an AAPA member, I abide by their Code of Ethics.
