Leslie Mitchell got excited about pottery when he was ten years old. His parents bought an old pottery shop in Oak Cliff and the atmosphere and pottery process intrigued him. Mitchell continued his education in pottery at the Arts Magnate School in Dallas and moved to Mineola in 1982. Mitchell is best known for his Raku Flash Pottery, based on an old Japanese method dating back hundreds of years.
