On one side is an applied flower, which looks like a bearded iris. This vase stands approximately 6 7/8 inches tall. It is about 6 inches long and 5 3/8 inches wide.
Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 13.9 ounces. There are dots of glaze beneath in a linear arrangement, as shown, and these may be glaze test areas. This would be an unusual addition to a collection of American art pottery.Identification The vase is marked beneath, as shown. The mark is believed to say, "JO HUTSON 1941" and, SAN JOSE.
This pot was probably made in San Antonio, Texas by one of the potteries affiliated with Ethel Wilson Harris in the region of the Mission San Jose. Harris' first pottery company, Mexican Arts and Crafts, was started in 1931.
This shouldered, footed vase form is similar to one produced by the later Alamo Pottery of San Antonio, which operated from 1945 to 1951. Condition The vase looks very good overall, with no chips or cracks. As this is a hand formed piece, it has minor asymmetry and variations in glazing.
