Magnificent 10"x10" Japanese Awaji Vase with Flambé Drip Glaze. Beautiful form, glaze and coloring, a pleasure to look at! Art Deco, Arts and Crafts.
Larger 10" high x 10" diameter vase, smooth and glossy vase with a strong sense of symmetry. Polychrome flambé drip glaze in green, blue on a beigy-pink ground. There are 4 open loop branch-like handles, an unusual feature.
Impressed Made in Japan and Sanpei flag mark (Awaji) in the base. This Made in Japan mark was used between 1922 and the Awaji kilns closing in 1939. There is also a word starting with K__ on the base, however I cant make out the rest of it.
Very clean inside and out. No cracks, chips or repairs.
There is extremely fine overall glaze crazing which is visible only on close inspection. There is a shallow 2 streak which seems to have been there in the original clay at the time of manufacture and has been glazed over (see last photo); a couple of small black flecks which seem to be from time of manufacture and do not detract; some tiny glaze pops at the opening as shown. Size: 10 high x 10 diameter (at the widest part of the vase). The opening is 4-1/2 diameter. Item weight: 6 lb 7.1 oz.
Please look through all photos carefully as they are an important part of the description. Feel free to contact Quail and Bear with questions for for more photos.
