Manchu and Lotus head vase planters. Manchu: 7.5 high by 6 wide. Lotus: 8 high by 6 wide. Made in USA Madison Wisconsin. This is an exquisite example of Betty Harringtons design genius.
This set was crafted by Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin and was introduced in 1950 as a new concept. Having seen the popularity of decorative head vases made by other companies, Betty Harrington jumped on the bandwagon and introduced several sets.
She took this decorating trend to a new level by producing wares that would sell well in upscale furniture stores, jewelry stores, and gift shops. What set the Ceramic Arts Studio pieces apart from the crowd was the technique she used to do the eyes on these pieces. Harrington would carve the 3 dimensional outlines of the eyes into the mold so that they would stand out when fired. This gave the pieces an exquisite yet somewhat eerie quality.
Another unique feature of the Ceramic Arts Studio items was the airbrushed rosy cheeks that you will find on their pieces. Manchu and Lotus are highly detailed. They have intriguing and serenely mysterious facial expressions. There is minimal crazing on the base of Lotus. Please note that white spots in photos are from camera glare. I hope you will find a place for these wonderful decorative pieces in your collection of fine American ceramic arts.
