George Scatchard was a longtime Vermont studio potter whose career began in Vermont in the 1960s. He became known for his distinctive high-fired stoneware and later for his celebrated ceramic lamp designs. This functional pottery represents the earlier side of Scatchard's body of work.
This coordinated set features a gorgeous earthy, speckled stoneware body with horizontal bands of warm brown, cream and gray-blue tones. Visible throwing lines, subtle glaze variations and individually formed details give each piece the wonderful character associated with handmade studio pottery. The teapot features a substantial curved handle, matching fitted lid with raised knob, elongated pouring spout, and an integrated strainer at the interior opening of the spout. All three pieces individually signed G.Widest point of body: 6.5. Top opening diameter: 3.5 each. The set is in very good vintage condition overall. The only notable flaws observed are several tiny chips/nicks along the edge of the teapot spout.
These areas have been specifically photographed and are visible in the close-up images. No other chips or cracks were observed on the teapot, lid, or cups. Please examine all photographs carefully for exact condition.
Variations in form, throwing marks and glaze are inherent characteristics of handmade studio pottery and add to the individual character of each piece. A beautiful surviving group of George Scatchard functional studio pottery, made especially appealing by having the matching teapot and two cups together, with every piece individually signed by the artist.
